We have newly introduced an arbitrary waveform generator (AWG).

In our laboratory, we aim to realize a toy model of the “quantum universe”—a Planck-scale cosmos that emerges in the earliest stages of the Big Bang—on a semiconductor chip. In this toy universe, the counterpart of “light” is represented by charge waves in the semiconductor. To excite such charge waves, extremely fast electrical pulses are required.

The newly installed arbitrary waveform generator is capable of producing high-speed voltage pulses with a minimum rise time of 20 picoseconds (20–80%). Moreover, voltage pulses are also essential to mimic the expansion of the toy universe. With this AWG, we can generate time-dependent universes—such as expanding and contracting ones—on demand.
